Globalization
The process by which businesses or other organizations develop international influence or start operating on an international scale.
CanCon (Canadian Content)
Content that meets certain criteria as outlined in the Broadcasting Act to contribute to the creation and promotion of Canadian culture.
Media Consolidation
The concentration of news sources into the hands of fewer and fewer corporations.
Media Convergence
The interconnection of communication technologies, computer networks, media content, and information.
Cultural Homogenization
The idea that different cultures transform and become more similar to each other as globalization progresses.
Hybridization
The mixing or blending of different cultures that results in the emergence of a new unique culture.
Digital Divide
The gap that separates those who do and do not have access to up-to-date technology, particularly the internet.
Cultural Exchange
A mutual sharing of information between two or more cultural collectives for the purpose of improving friendship and understanding.
Linguistic Identity
How our identity is shaped by the languages we speak, impacting collectives we identify with.
Marginalization
The process by which individuals or groups are pushed to the edges of society, limiting their access to resources and opportunities.
Cultural Assimilation
The process whereby individuals or groups with different ethnic or cultural heritage are absorbed into the dominant culture.
Acculturation
The process of adapting to a new society, often involving changes in cultural patterns.
Metropolis
A large, busy city, especially the main city of a country or region.
Megacity
An urban center with a population of 10 million or more.
Affirmation of Identity
Ways that people or groups assert themselves in their community, acknowledging their belonging to a particular group.
Cultural Revitalization
The effort to restore new life to a culture.
