BILLS OF ATTAINDER
A bill of attainder is a legislative act that declarees a person or group of persons guilty of some crime and punishes them without a trial.
EX POST FACTO LAWS
An ex post facto law:
Criminalizes an act that was not a crime when it was committed
Authorizes a more severe penalty after an act was committed
Deprives a defendant of a defense available when the act was committed or
Decreases the prosecution’s burden of proof below that required when the act was committed.
OBLIGATION OF CONTRACTS
The Contracts Clause bars the states from passing any law “impairing the obligation of contracts.” This prohibition applies only to state legislation—not state-court decisions or federal legislation—that retroactively impairs contractual rights. It does not apply to future contracts.
