Point Guard
Floor general; shortest, quickest player. excellent ball handling (usually best on the team) excellent passing abilities, good shooter
Shooting Guard
aka off-guard, best shooter on team, ability to knock down jumpers with consistency all over the court
Small Forward
most versatile of the 5 positions, can score, rebound, pass, defend well, taller and stronger than shooting guard, but smaller than power forwards
Power Forward
strong inside game, excellent rebounding and shot blocking abilities, can knock down open shots, gets physical in the paint
Center
tallest and biggest, strong aggressive rebounding abilities and strong defensive presence, all around great abilities around the basket
Offensive team
team that has possession of ball
Defensive team
team that doesn’t have the ball
Man to Man defense
one person guards another person from the entire game, preventing that one person from scoring
Zone defense
Each team assigned a “zone” in the key area, prevents anyone from scoring in their area
Backcourt Area
the ½ of the court nearest the basket your team is defending
Frontcourt Area
the ½ of the court nearest the basket your team is trying to score at
Violations
infringement for which the ball is put into play from out-of-bounds, penalties are taken at the out-of-bounds line closest to where the violation occurred
Traveling Violation
moving illegally with the ball; when player takes more than two steps without dribbling
Double Dribble Violation
player continues dribbling after grasping the ball w/ two hands and then starts dribbling again
Three Seconds in the Key
when a player is in the key area for more than 3 seconds
Backcourt violation
when the offensive team moves the ball over the ½ court line; then dribbles/passes the ball back over the ½ court line, without the ball being touched by the defensive team
Fouls
Infringement/breaking of the rules, one or many free throws may be awarded
Blocking (foul)
personal contact which impedes the progress of an opponent with or without the ball
Charging (foul)
a player w/ the ball moves into an opponent whose position is legal or whose path is already established
Hacking (foul)
The player hits the arm/hand of the person holding/shooting the ball
Disqualifying foul
Unnecessary roughness (hitting, shoving, tripping) or unsportsmanlike behavior (foul language). player removed from game
Chest pass
two hands, elbows out

thumbs end pointing down - makes backspin (same as bounce)
Bounce Pass
two hands, elbows at sides
fingers on sides, thumbs on back (same as chest)
thumbs end pointing down (same as chest)
focus on a point 2/3 of the way to your partner (where it should bounce)
Two-Handed overhand pass
hold ball with both hands above head, elbows pointed forward
Extend arms, snap wrists, fingers pointing down
Release ball at forehead
