Summer solstice
The day with the most daylight (June 21)
Winter solstice
The day with the least daylight (Dec 21)
Equinox
When the sun rises exactly on the axis, resulting in equal sun and night time. (Mar 21 & Sep 22)
The sun takes a longer time to set/rise.
It gets indirect sunlight bc the sun directly hits the equator.
There’s less heating of the ground and atmosphere
What are three reasons why Canada is colder during the winter?
During the summer the sun takes a longer and higher path to set, therefore making it warmer.
Why do we get longer days with sunlight, during summer?
During the winter the sun takes a shorter path to set, therefore making it colder.
Why do we get shorter days with less sunlight, during winter?
Seasons are caused by the rotation of earth’s axis, and which way the northern hemisphere is pointed to.
Why are there seasons?
Summer!
When the northern hemisphere is pointed to the sun, its….
Winter!
When the northern hemisphere is pointed away from the sun, it’s…
Sunlight is hitting onto a smaller area of earth’s surface.
Sunlight causes more heating of the ground and atmosphere
List 2 reasons why Canada gets more heat during the summer
Rotation
The motion of spinning on an axis (eg, earth rotates once a day on its axis)
Revolution
The motion of one body around another
Why don’t we have solar and lunar eclipses every month?
They happen 2x a year, bc eclipses can occur when the sun, moon, and earth are lined up. This doesn’t happen often, bc of moon’s orbit and the angle of earth’s orbit.
