Kings, Jarls, Karls, Thralls

We were the Jarls?

Nobles, landowners, leaders

Who were the Karls?

Free farmers, craftsmen and traders. They made up most of society

Who were the Thralls?

Slaves who worked for Karls and Jarls. They were often captured during raids.

Who was Odin?

God of wisdom and war, leader of the Gods, associated with runes and poetry

Who was Thor?

God of thunder and protection, hammer called Mjölnir, defended gods and humans from giants

Who was Freyja?

Goddess of love and fertility, associated with magic, received half of the warriors who died in battle

What is Scandinavia?

Homeland of the Vikings - Norway, Sweden, Denmark

Large wooden home shared by families and animals

Fast, shallow Viking ship used for travel and raiding

A story or legend about Viking heroes

What was the Thing?

Viking meeting where laws were made and disputes settled

What rights did women have?

Could own property, request divorce and run households

What responsibilities did Viking women have?

Managing farms, raising children and overseeing slaves

How do Viking women differ from other medieval women?

They had more legal rights and social independence

Why was Lindisfarne and attractive target?

Wealthy monastery, poor defence, filled with treasure, remote location

What happened during the raid?

Vikings attacked, killed monks, looted valuables and took people as slaves.

Why is it considered the start of the Viking age?

It was the first major Viking raid
