What is language?
Rule governed, generative symbol system shared by a group
What is culture?
A set of shared beliefs, customs, values experiences, expectations, stories, and the group history

being aware of your feelings
What is unconscious bias?
not being aware of the bias - leads to micro aggression, which are slight insults that communicate hostility
What are stereotypes?
overgeneralization applied to everyone in the group
What is the least effort principle?
the natural tendency for speakers to use the minimum physical and cognitive energy necessary to communicate a message while still being understood by the listener
What are the social determinants of health?
Non-medical variables that affect the health and well-being of the client
Explain protective factors, social risk factors, and social needs
Protective Factors: characteristics that benefit health outcomes (practice outside of therapy)
Social Risk Factors: characteristics that decrease health outcomes (using drugs)
Social Needs: barrier to accessing services and support (voice specialist not available)
What is the ACCESS strategy for clinical interviews?
Ask the client about their communication skills and preferences
Communicate directly with the client, not with their caregivers
Confirm that you understand what the client said
Eliminate distractions to increase attention for both you and the client
Slow down
Support communication for yourself and the client by using a variety of communication needs (gestures, writing, pictures)
