What is Command's responsibility in FHP?
The duty of care for all personnel
What is a Health Hazard?
Something that could harm health (acute or chronic)
What are the four general sources of health hazards?
Biological, Environmental, Natural, Anthropogenic
What are the components of Risk Assessment?
Exposure to the hazard, probability that each exposure will cause an adverse health effect and the anticipated impact of the hazard on the outcome of interest.
What is Risk Management?
A systematic approach to setting the best course of action.
What is the hierarchy of controls?
Elimination, minimisation, isolation, engineering control measures, and administration control measures. Most to least effective.
What is the purpose of Programme Evaluation?
To ensure that risk controls are implemented and enforced to standards
What are the components of Programme Evaluation?
Walkthrough of accommodation and eating areas and formal investigation of outbreaks, occupational exposures and post-deployment illness
What are the components of Health promotion and readiness?
Education and awareness of health threats and health risks as well as measures to reduce risk
What are the components of the Pre deployment phase?
Medical intelligence, EH site reconnaissance and identifying preventative measures
What are the components of the Deployment phase?
Health surveillance, identifying and assessing potential and EH hazards and documenting occupational environmental exposures
What are the components of the Post deployment phase?
Medical screening, post OP monitoring and exposures to endemic disease
What are the components of a health brief?
Introduction and outline, water, food and sanitation, diseases of importance, climate and topography, pollution, roads and safety and industrial and environmental hazards
What infrastructure is assessed for medics?
Size, type of construction and condition and previous use
What are the 3 defined areas when advising command on camp siting considerations?
Operational/Work areas, Support area, Accommodation
What conditions are considered when advising command on camp siting?
Wind, Messing areas and Sanitary
What are health threats in relation to the siting of a camp?
Local populace, swampy areas and dry, wooded areas
Where should field hygiene appliances be located?
Downwind and downstream of camp
What waste management strategies should be implemented in a camp?
Minimal handling, reduce all health risks linked with the waste and environmental health best practice
What is USSR regarding waste management?
Urine, Soil, Sullage, Refuse
What steps should individuals and medics follow to prevent communicable disease spread?
Maintain personal hygiene, adhere to common direction and conduct health intervention strategies as directed
What is the chain of infection?
Source, Route, Target
What are some control measures at the source of infection?
Treatment, Disinfection and Education.
What is FAT TOM?
Food, Acidity, Time, Temperature, Oxygen, Moisture
What is the danger zone for temperature control?
5-60 degrees
What does HACCP stand for?
Water supplies and health threats
Under what four categories can contamination of water be considered?
Microbiological, physical, radiological and chemical
What are the chlorine residual terms?
FAC= Free available chlorine. CAC= Combined available chlorine. TAC= Total available chlorine.
What is the dosage calculation for chlorine?
Required chlorine dose (mg/L) / % chlorine in product X volume (L) / 10
What are the 9 classes of hazardous substances?
Explosives, Flammable gases, Flammable liquids, FLammable solids, Oxidesers, toxics, Radiation, Corrosives, Ecotoxics
What is the HSNO Act 1996?
Reforms and restates the law relating to hazardous substances in NZ
What is the purpose of the HSNO act?
To protect the environment, and the health and safety of people and communities, by preventing or managing the adverse effects of hazardous substances and new organisms
What does the HSNO Act 1996 integrate with?
Health and safety at work act 2015 (HSWA), Resource Managment Act 1991 (RMA) and Agricultural compounds and veterinary medicines act 1997 (ACVM)
What orders and publications relate to hazardous substances?
DFO 41 Safe management of hazardous substances
What is the assessment of collections?
Determine the names and quantities of hazardous substances held, Obtain an up to date safety data sheet for each hazardous substance held and Separate the hazardous substances into their different compatibility groups
What are a substance's properties?
Explosiveness, Flammability and Oxidising capacity
What are the two parts of assigning controls?
Type of hazard: establish wether it is a gas, liquid or solid and hazardous properties: establish the hazardous properties of a substance
How fast does a safety data sheet need to be available?
Must be available within 10 minutes to anyone handling the substance
What are the three levels of emergency plans required depending on the volumes of product stored on the premises?
Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3
What is safe storage practice?
Combustible materials must be removed to a safe storage place when not actually in use
What should a storage area be?
Weather resistant, floor impervious to liquids and Bunded
