Human Resource Management (HRM)
The organizational function dealing with the fundamental concepts, importance, and strategic role of HR managers in organizations.
Strategic HRM
The integration of human resource management with the strategic goals and objectives of the organization.
Human Resource Planning
The process involving the forecasting, objectives, and planning of an organization's human resources.
Job Analysis
The multi-faceted process that includes creating a Job Description and a Job Specification.
Job Description
A written statement describing the duties, responsibilities, and conditions of a job, developed during Job Analysis.
Job Specification
A statement of the human qualifications, skills, and knowledge necessary for a job, developed during Job Analysis.
Recruitment
The process of identifying and attracting potential employees, including sources of recruitment, process, and employer branding.
Selection
The process of choosing the best candidate for a position from a pool of applicants.
Employer Branding
The process of promoting a company, or an organization, as the employer of choice to a desired target group.
Induction
The process of introducing a new employee to the organization and their specific role.
Training & Development
The process involving the identification of needs, methods of training, and the evaluation of training programs to improve employee skills.
Performance Management
A concept that involves methods of assessing employee work performance and identifying rating errors.
Competency Management
The practice of identifying, managing, and developing the competencies of employees in an organization.
Compensation Management
The administration of employee compensation, including job evaluation, incentives, benefits, and various types of compensation plans.
Job Evaluation
A systematic way of determining the value or worth of a job in relation to other jobs in an organization, used within Compensation Management.
Career Planning
The process by which an employee charts their career path and develops strategies to achieve their career goals.
Succession Planning
The process of identifying and developing high-potential employees to fill key business leadership positions in the future.
Talent Management
An organization's commitment to recruit, hire, retain, and develop high-potential employees.
Productivity Management
The study and application of techniques to improve organizational efficiency, including TQM, Kaizen, and Quality Circles.
TQM (Total Quality Management)
A management approach to long-term success through customer satisfaction, involving all members of an organization in improving processes.
Kaizen
A Japanese business philosophy of continuous improvement of working practices and personal efficiency.
Quality Circles
A group of employees who meet regularly to consider ways of resolving problems and improving production in their organization.
Industrial Relations
The management of relationships between employers and employees, covering areas such as grievances and collective bargaining.
Collective Bargaining
Negotiation of wages and other conditions of employment by an organized body of employees.
Superannuation
A form of retirement or separation referring to a regular payment made into a fund by an employee toward a future pension.
Voluntary Retirement Schemes
A method of separation where an employee chooses to retire before their official retirement date, often with financial incentives.
Lay off
A temporary or permanent discharge of a worker or workers, usually because of economic conditions or shortage of work.
Exit Interview
An interview held with an employee about to leave an organization, typically to discuss the reasons for departure and gain feedback.
International Human Resource Management (IHRM)
The management of human resources in an international context, involving the comparison of domestic and international HR activities.
