Anatomy
The study of external and internal body structures, the physical relationships between body parts, and careful observation of the human body to provide clues about physiological functions.
Physiology
The study of how the human body functions and the specific mechanisms involved.
Cytology
The branch of microscopic anatomy that studies the internal structure of individual cells, which are the smallest units of life.
Histology
The branch of microscopic anatomy that studies tissues, which are groups of specialized cells that work together to perform specific functions.
Surface Anatomy
The study of general anatomical form, or morphology, referring to superficial anatomical markings visible on the surface of the body.
Regional Anatomy
An approach to gross anatomy that emphasizes spatial relationships among structures and focuses on all internal and external features in a specific body region, such as the head, neck, or trunk.
Systemic Anatomy
The study of gross anatomy based upon the body's organ systems.
Clinical Anatomy
An anatomical specialty that focuses on anatomical features that undergo recognizable pathological changes during illness.
Surgical Anatomy
An anatomical specialty that studies anatomical landmarks important for surgical procedures.
Radiographic Anatomy
The study of anatomical structures using x-rays or ultrasound scans.
Cross-sectional Anatomy
The study of cross sections of the body using specialized radiographic techniques such as CT, MRI, and spiral scans.
Homeostasis
The maintenance of a relatively constant internal environment suitable for cells and essential for basic life functions.

Anatomical Position
The standard reference position for the human body, standing erect with feet flat on the floor, hands at the sides, and palms facing forward (anterior).
Supine
Lying down face up while in the anatomical position.
Prone
Lying down face down while in the anatomical position.

Abdominopelvic Quadrants
A system that subdivides the abdomen and pelvic regions into four sections: Right Upper Quadrant (RUQ), Left Upper Quadrant (LUQ), Right Lower Quadrant (RLQ), and Left Lower Quadrant (LLQ).

Abdominopelvic Regions
A grid system that subdivides the abdomen and pelvic area into nine distinct sections for precise descriptive anatomical locations.
Right Lower Quadrant (RLQ)
The abdominopelvic quadrant containing the cecum, appendix, portions of the small intestine, right ureter, and reproductive organs (right ovary in biological females, right spermatic cord in biological males).
Sagittal Plane
A sectional plane oriented parallel to the long axis that divides the body or tissue into right and left portions.
Midsagittal Plane
A sagittal plane that passes directly through the midline, dividing the body equally into left and right sides.
Parasagittal Plane
A sagittal plane that misses the midline, separating the body into unequal right and left portions.
Transverse Plane
A sectional plane oriented perpendicular to the long axis (at right angles to frontal and sagittal planes) that separates the body into superior and inferior portions.

Frontal Plane
A sectional plane (also called coronal plane) oriented parallel to the long axis that separates the body into anterior and posterior portions.
Serial Reconstruction
An analytical process using a series of sectional images cut at small intervals to visualize complex three-dimensional structures.

Body Cavities
Internal chambers that protect internal organs, allow them to change shape and size, and contain fluid linings to prevent friction.
Diaphragm
A flat muscular sheet that separates the superior thoracic cavity from the inferior abdominopelvic cavity.
Mediastinum
The central tissue mass between the right and left pleural cavities that contains the trachea, esophagus, major blood vessels, and the pericardial cavity.
Visceral Pleura
The inner layer of the serous membrane that directly covers the outer surface of the lungs.
Transudate
The watery fluid produced on the surface of a serous membrane that reduces friction between opposing visceral and parietal layers.
Sign
An objective, measurable physical indicator of disease observed or measured by a healthcare provider, such as a fever.
Symptom
A subjective indication of disease reported by the patient, such as pain or fatigue.
Eponym
A commemorative term given to an anatomical structure or clinical condition named after the discoverer or a famous patient.
Cellularity
A characteristic of epithelial tissue in which cells are bound tightly together with virtually no intercellular space.
Epithelial Polarity
The structural and functional structural differentiation between the exposed apical surface and attached basolateral surface of epithelial cells.
Avascularity
The condition of lacking blood vessels, which is characteristic of all epithelial tissues.
Microvilli
Small projections on the exposed apical surface of epithelial cells, particularly in the digestive and urinary tracts, that increase surface area for absorption.
Stereocilia
Extremely long, non-motile microvilli found on the apical surface of cells lining the inner ear and the male reproductive tract.
Simple Epithelium
An epithelium consisting of a single layer of cells above the basement membrane, typical of protected internal body spaces.
Stratified Epithelium
An epithelium composed of two or more layers of cells, found in regions subjected to mechanical or chemical stress.
Simple Squamous Epithelium
A single layer of delicate, flattened cells that reduces friction, controls vessel permeability, and absorbs or secretes materials.
Mesothelium
A simple squamous epithelium lining the ventral body cavities (pleural, pericardial, and peritoneal cavities).
Endothelium
A simple squamous epithelium lining the inner walls of the heart and all blood vessels.
Stratified Squamous Epithelium
An epithelium with multiple cell layers where surface cells are flat; protects against abrasion, pathogens, and chemical attack.
Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
A single layer of cube-shaped cells providing limited protection, secretion, and absorption; located in glands, ducts, kidney tubules, and the thyroid gland.
Stratified Cuboidal Epithelium
A rare epithelium composed of multiple layers of cube-shaped cells lining the ducts of sweat glands.
Simple Columnar Epithelium
A single layer of tall, column-shaped cells providing protection, secretion, and absorption; lines the stomach, intestines, gallbladder, uterine tubes, and kidney collecting ducts.
Stratified Columnar Epithelium
A rare multi-layered epithelium providing protection in small areas of the pharynx, epiglottis, anus, mammary glands, salivary gland ducts, and urethra.
Pseudostratified Ciliated Columnar Epithelium
A single layer of columnar cells with nuclei situated at varying levels, giving a false layered appearance; lines the nasal cavity, trachea, bronchi, prostate gland, epididymis, and vas deferens.
Transitional Epithelium
A stratified epithelium with oddly shaped cells that permits expansion and recoil after stretching; lines the urinary bladder, renal pelvis, and ureters.
Exocrine Gland
A gland that discharges its secretions through ducts onto an epithelial surface.
Endocrine Gland
A ductless gland that secretes hormones directly into blood or lymph.
Merocrine Secretion
The most common mode of exocrine secretion in which products are packaged into secretory vesicles and released by exocytosis without damaging the cell.
Apocrine Secretion
A mode of exocrine secretion involving the shedding of the apical portion of the cell's cytoplasm filled with secretory vesicles.

Holocrine Secretion
A mode of exocrine secretion in which the entire cell becomes packed with secretory product and bursts apart, destroying the gland cell.

Connective Tissue Categories
The three major subdivisions of connective tissue: Connective Tissue Proper, Fluid Connective Tissue, and Supporting Connective Tissue.
Matrix
The collective term for the extracellular component of any connective tissue, consisting of extracellular protein fibers and ground substance.
Areolar Tissue
A loose connective tissue with an open framework of collagen and elastic fibers that cushions organs, permits independent movement, and forms the lamina propria of mucous membranes.
White Fat
Unilocular adipose tissue predominant in adults that stores energy in a single large lipid droplet per cell, providing padding and thermal insulation.
Brown Fat
Multilocular adipose tissue abundant in infants that contains numerous mitochondria and rich vascularization to generate heat for temperature regulation.
Reticular Tissue
A loose connective tissue dominated by reticular fibers that provides a supporting framework (stroma) for organs such as the liver, spleen, lymph nodes, and bone marrow.
Tendon
A dense regular connective tissue structure consisting of densely packed parallel collagen fibers that attaches skeletal muscle to bone.
Aponeurosis
A broad, collagenous sheet of dense regular connective tissue that attaches muscle to muscle or other structures.
Ligament
A dense regular connective tissue structure containing collagen and elastic fibers that connects bone to bone or stabilizes internal organs.
Dense Irregular Connective Tissue
A dense connective tissue with interwoven collagen fibers oriented in various directions, providing strength to resist forces applied from many directions.
Interstitial Fluid
The fluid that bathes the body's cells within tissues.
Chondrocyte
A mature cartilage cell residing within a small matrix space called a lacuna.
Perichondrium
A fibrous layer surrounding cartilage consisting of an outer fibrous layer for support and an inner chondrogenic cellular layer for growth and repair.
Appositional Growth
Cartilage growth mechanism in which stem cells of the inner perichondrium differentiate into chondroblasts that add new layers to the surface of the cartilage.
Interstitial Growth
Cartilage growth mechanism in which chondrocytes divide within lacunae and produce additional matrix material from within.
Hyaline Cartilage
The most common type of cartilage, featuring a translucent gelatinous matrix; provides stiff but flexible support and reduces friction between bony surfaces.
Elastic Cartilage
A cartilage type containing closely packed elastic fibers that tolerates distortion without damage and returns to its original shape.
Fibrous Cartilage
A dense cartilage dominated by collagen fibers that resists compression, prevents bone-to-bone contact, and limits relative movement.
Osteon
The basic functional unit of compact bone, consisting of concentric lamellae of bone matrix surrounding a central canal containing blood vessels.
Periosteum
A membrane covering outer bone surfaces composed of an outer fibrous layer and an inner osteogenic layer.
Mucous Membrane
A composite membrane lining body passageways that open to the exterior (digestive, respiratory, urinary, reproductive) consisting of an epithelium and an underlying areolar layer called lamina propria.
Serous Membrane
A membrane lining sealed internal body cavities consisting of a mesothelium supported by areolar tissue that secretes transudate.
Cutaneous Membrane
The skin covering the outer surface of the body, composed of keratinized stratified squamous epithelium, areolar connective tissue, and dense irregular connective tissue.
Synovial Membrane
An incomplete membrane lining joint cavities that lacks a basement membrane and secretes synovial fluid to lubricate joints.
Sarcolemma
The specialized plasma membrane of a muscle cell.
Sarcoplasm
The cytoplasm of a muscle cell.
Skeletal Muscle Tissue
A voluntary striated muscle tissue composed of long, cylindrical, multinucleated muscle fibers that cannot divide but can undergo partial repair via myosatellite cells.
Myosatellite Cells
Stem cells located in adult skeletal muscle tissue that divide and fuse to form new skeletal muscle fibers, allowing partial tissue repair after injury.
Cardiac Muscle Tissue
An involuntary striated muscle tissue found only in the heart, consisting of short, branched cells usually containing a single central nucleus connected by intercalated discs.
Intercalated Discs
Specialized cell junctions that interconnect cardiac muscle cells structurally, functionally, and electrically.
Smooth Muscle Tissue
An involuntary nonstriated muscle tissue made of short, spindle-shaped cells with a single central nucleus that can divide and regenerate after injury.

Neuron Structure
A neural cell specialized for electrical impulse transmission, consisting of a cell body (soma), dendrites to receive incoming signals, and an axon to conduct outgoing signals.
Neuroglia
Supporting cells of neural tissue that isolate, protect, and support neurons.
Osteoporosis
An age-related reduction in bone mass and strength caused by inactivity, low calcium levels, and hormonal changes.
Zygote
The single cell containing 46 chromosomes created by the fertilization of an ovum by a sperm.
Blastocyst
A hollow ball of cells formed through cleavage divisions during the first week of embryonic development.
Trophoblast
The outer cell layer of the blastocyst that gives rise to the placenta.
Inner Cell Mass
The cluster of cells inside the blastocyst that forms the actual embryo and differentiates into the primary germ layers.

Primary Germ Layers
The three embryonic cell layers (ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm) organized during the second week of development that produce all tissue types.
Ectoderm
The superficial primary germ layer that gives rise to neural tissue, epidermis, and associated glands.
Mesoderm
The middle primary germ layer that gives rise to muscle tissue, connective tissues, and the cardiovascular system.
Endoderm
The deep primary germ layer that gives rise to the epithelial linings of the digestive and respiratory tracts.
Embryonic Shield
An oval two-layered region of embryonic development formed at approximately two weeks containing an upper ectoderm and an underlying endoderm.
Primitive Streak
A region on the embryonic shield where superficial cells migrate between ectoderm and endoderm to create the intermediate mesoderm layer.
