Superior

Toward the head or upper part

Inferior

Toward the feet or lower part.

Anterior

Toward the front of the body

Posterior

Toward the back of the body

Medial

Toward the middle or midline of the body

Lateral

Away from the middle or midline of the body

Proximal

Closer to the point where the limb attaches to the trunk

Distal

Farther from the point where the limb attaches to the trunk

Superficial

Closer to the surface of the body.

Deep

Farther from the surface of the body.

Unilateral

Occurring on only one side of the body

Bilateral

Occurring on both sides of the body

Ipsilateral

On the same side of the body

Contralateral

On the opposite side of the body
