Symbol Capitalization Rule
The first letter of an element symbol is always a capital, and the second letter, if present, is always lowercase.
Co vs. CO Distinction
Co represents the element cobalt, whereas CO represents carbon and oxygen bonded together.
Letterform Requirement
Students must use ordinary print letterforms and avoid writing oversized lowercase letters that could be read as capitals.
Atomic Number Function
Atomic numbers appear for reference only to help locate elements on the periodic table and must not be memorized.
