Putting a line of a text into your own words generally focusing on the literal meaning.

Symbol
Using a concrete item to represent something abstract like a feeling, belief, or idea Contains layers of meaning based on the qualities of the concrete item
Motif
An image, sound, actions, ideas, or words that appear frequently in a story Motifs must recur throughout the story, but symbols can appear just once. reinforce or contribute to the theme of a text.
Imply
Used by an author to suggest something
Infer
Conclusions reached by the reader on the basis of evidence and reasoning.
Denotation
The objective meaning of a word The “Dictionary Definition” The literal meaning of a word
Connotation
The connections associated with a word; the figurative meaning. Can generally have a positive or a negative association
