Putting a line of a text into your own words generally focusing on the literal meaning.

Definition:A statement that tells what the author intended the reader to learn from the story It is general which means it does NOT contain character names or specific events from the story.

diction

The author’s specific choice of words

Mood

Tone

the author’s or speaker’s attitude towards a subject. created by:Diction,Dialogue no nouns or verbs old adjective

Symbol

Using a concrete item to represent something abstract like a feeling, belief, or idea Contains layers of meaning based on the qualities of the concrete item

Motif

An image, sound, actions, ideas, or words that appear frequently in a story Motifs must recur throughout the story, but symbols can appear just once. reinforce or contribute to the theme of a text.

Imply

Used by an author to suggest something

Infer

Conclusions reached by the reader on the basis of evidence and reasoning.

Denotation

Connotation

The connections associated with a word; the figurative meaning. Can generally have a positive or a negative association

Repetition

A literary device that intentionally uses the same word or phrase multiple times in a text.

Allusion

A passing reference to something well
