Strategic Plan Development
The process of determining program needs, defining program scope, and developing a written mission statement in collaboration with administrators, student-athletes, coaches, physicians, athletic trainers, parents, and community leaders.
SWOT Analysis
An ongoing review process that evaluates the internal Strengths and Weaknesses, as well as the external Opportunities and Threats, of a healthcare program.
Policies
Clearly written statements of basic rules that define the 'what' and 'why' for clinic operations.
Procedures
Detailed descriptions outlining the specific processes or 'how' policies are executed within a clinic.
Expendable Supplies
Supplies used in athletic training that cannot be reused, such as first aid items and injury prevention supplies.
Non-expendable Supplies
Reusable supplies within an athletic training clinic, such as ACE wraps and scissors.
Capital Equipment
Large equipment items that remain inside the athletic training facility over multiple years, such as ice machines and treatment tables.
Non-consumable Capital Equipment
Reusable equipment items that can be transported outside the facility, such as crutches, coolers, and athletic training kits.
Emergency Action Plan (EAP)
A written plan for accessing outside emergency personnel, coordinating athlete transportation to emergency facilities, and defining staff roles during an emergency.
GFI (Ground Fault Interrupter)
An electrical safety system required for outlets in hydrotherapy areas, which must be installed 5 feet above the floor to prevent electrical hazards.
Work Conditioning
An intensive outpatient rehabilitation program for injured workers involving treatment for 3 hours/day, 3 days/week to restore functionality.
Work Hardening
An intensive outpatient therapy program consisting of 8 hours of daily treatment for 5 days/week designed to return an individual to full duty capacity.
Functional Capacity Evaluation
An assessment component of work hardening that evaluates prolonged sitting/standing, hand grip strength, lifting abilities, balance, carrying capabilities, and repetitive tasks.
HIPAA
Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act; a law regulating the dissemination of personal health information (PHI) and granting athletes control over disclosure.
FERPA
Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act; a federal law protecting the privacy of student educational records, which transfers rights from parents to the student at age 18.
Station Examination
A pre-participation exam method providing detailed physical exams efficiently, ideally staffed by a team of nine (2 physicians, 2 non-physicians, and 5 managers or student athletic trainers).
Tanner's Five Stage Assessment
A maturity evaluation method assessing sexual development from Stage 1 (no puberty) to Stage 5 (full development), where Stage 3 is critical for high-impact sports due to growth plates being 2 to 5× weaker than joint capsules.
Sickle Cell Trait Screening
An NCAA-mandated blood test for Division I athletes prior to their first season to detect sickle cell trait, unless a waiver is signed or prior test proof is provided.
Americans with Disabilities Act (1990)
Federal legislation dictating that an athlete makes the final decision regarding sport participation following medical recommendations and potential disqualification findings.
SOAP Note
An injury evaluation standard format encompassing Subjective history, Objective evaluation details, Assessment opinion, and Plan for rehabilitation.
Treatment Log
A daily tracking log used to record services provided, monitor patient compliance, and serve as legal documentation during litigation.
Personal Information Card
A record containing contact details for an athlete's family, personal physician, and insurance provider.
Annual Report
A summary of athletic training facility operations, injury statistics, and patient counts used to evaluate program success and suggest changes.
National Center of Catastrophic Sport Injury Research
A surveillance system dedicated to tracking catastrophic injuries across all participation levels of sports.
National Electronic Injury Surveillance System
A system that monitors injury data relative to consumer products to determine if products are hazardous or defective.
National High School Sports-Related Injury Surveillance Study
An internet-based tool managed by the Center for Injury Research and Policy that gathers time-loss injury data across a national sample of US high school athletes.
