Safety related
Alarms that are indicators of possible emergency/abnormal conditions that may have significant impact and consequences. As such, Safety-Related alarms will always be assigned the highest priority level ( P1 Alarm )
Operational Status
Alarms that indicate a change in status of a device which may impact operations but not yet at the safety related level.
Operational parameter
Alarmed that indicate operational conditions are outside of desired parameters but have not yet reached the level of safety related.
Diagnostic
Alarms that indicate a condition where process control or field equipment is not functioning as designed as a result of equipment failure or operator error.
Product quality
Alarms that indicate that parameters associated with monitoring the quality of material being transported are outside of acceptable range.
Alarm flood
Alarm flood is a phrase used to describe a condition which the rate of alarm generation exceeds that which the controller can effectively manage. Greater than 10 alarms on 10 minutes
Stale alarm
Is a term used to describe a p1,p2, or p3 alarm that remains in effect more than 12 hours.

Zero Tolerance (ZTOL)
System designated as ZTOL require an immediate station, facility, or system shutdown and isolation upon the receipt of a P1.
Non-zero tolerance ( Non-ZTOL )
A term that defines the expected response to a P1-Alarm. Systems designated as Non-ZTOL allow for the controller to perform an investigation prior to a shutdown and isolation of the facility or system upon the receipt of a P1.
Alarm management philosophy
The purpose of this document is to ensure that the scada system and its associated alarms an effective tool in helping the controller to take the proper action at the proper time.
