Glomerular filtration
The process of filtering plasma through the glomerular membrane into Bowman's capsule.
Tubular reabsorption
The process where substances are reabsorbed from the tubular fluid back into the vascular system.
Tubular secretion
The process where substances are secreted from the vascular system into the tubular fluid.
Glomerular filtration rate (GFR)
The amount of filtrate produced by the kidneys daily, approximately 180 L/day.
Structural integrity
The condition of the glomerular membrane affecting its filtration capacity.
Glomerular capillary wall
A single layer of endothelial cells with pores, allowing high permeability to water and solutes.
Basement membrane
Composed of collagen and glycoproteins, providing structural strength and repelling smaller proteins.
Bowman's capsule hydrostatic pressure (CP)
The pressure in Bowman's capsule opposing filtration, approximately 15 mmHg.
Plasma colloid osmotic pressure (COP)
The pressure due to plasma proteins that opposes filtration, approximately 30 mmHg.
Fenestrae
Pores in the endothelial cells of glomerular capillaries that enhance filtration.
Filtration slits
Narrow slits formed between the podocytes in the inner layer of Bowman's capsule allowing further filtration.
Glomerular capillary blood pressure (GCP)
The fluid pressure exerted by blood within glomerular capillaries, influencing filtration.
