Manufacturer's maintenance manual
The primary reference tool for the aviation maintenance technician working on aircraft.
Airframe maintenance manuals
Manuals that generally cover an aircraft and all of the equipment installed on it when it is in service.
Powerplant maintenance manuals
Manuals that cover areas of the engines that are not dealt with in the airframe manual.
Aircraft Manual (User Guide)
A technical communication document intended to give assistance to people using a particular system in aircraft, covering maintenance, troubleshooting, assembly, and installation.
AMM (Aircraft Maintenance Manual)
Contains data for scheduled maintenance procedures (MRM) and instructions to service, replace, adjust, test, inspect, check, clean, paint, and repair aircraft systems, usually on the ramp or in a hangar.
Maintenance Requirements Manual (MRM)
The manual that identifies scheduled maintenance procedures included in the AMM.
Air Transport Association (ATA) Chapter Numbers
A common referencing standard for all commercial aircraft documentation that permits greater ease of learning for pilots and engineers.
ATA Group 1
Aircraft General, covering Chapters 5 to 12.
ATA Group 2
Airframe Systems, covering Chapters 20−49.
ATA Group 3
Structure, covering Chapters 51 to 57.
ATA Group 4
Power Plant, covering Chapters 70 to 80.
ATA Group 5
Charts, specifically Chapter 91.
CMM (Component Maintenance Manual)

SRM (Structural Repair Manual)
A manufacturer-issued manual approved by national regulatory authorities describing approved repairs for an aircraft structure and identifying material types to prevent galvanic corrosion.
FIM (Fault Isolation Manual)
Provides technical data required by maintenance personnel to isolate the cause of a fault and determine corrective action; used for troubleshooting.
Troubleshooting
The step-by-step process by which the causes of equipment problems are identified so that proper repairs can be performed.
AIPC (Aircraft Illustrated Parts Catalogue)
Contains all individual line-replaceable units (LRUs) like light bulbs, seals, and filters where maintenance practices allow replacement of parts rather than the next higher assembly.
Maintenance Program Manuals
Documents providing airworthiness limitations, the manufacturer's recommended maintenance program, and task cards.
WDM (Wiring Diagram Manual)
Contains wiring diagrams, schematics, block diagrams, equipment lists, and major component locations, organized by the same chapter numbers used in the AMM.
Modification
The combination of all technical and administrative actions intended to change one or more functions of an object to improve product quality or speed.
NDTM (Non-Destructive Testing Manual)
Describes methods such as eddy current, X-ray, and dye penetrate inspections to ascertain the structural integrity of aircraft components.
ERM (Engine Rigging Manual)
Provides information required to rig the integrated engine and includes aircraft run-up checks following engine change or component replacement.
Ramp Service Manual
Contains abbreviated maintenance data for ramp servicing, including primary dimensions, ground handling, and routine fluid replenishment.
ITEM (Illustrated Tool and Equipment Manual)
Lists and illustrates the complete range of Ground Support Equipment (GSE) items available for the aircraft.
PPBM / PPBUM (Powerplant Build-Up Manual)
Lists special tools, fixtures, vendor codes, and standard practices for building up the aircraft powerplant.
TR’s (Temporary Revisions)
Updates to technical manuals issued between the regular revision cycles that occur every 3 months.
