Stem cell
A cell that is able to differentiate into all types of specialised cells
Embryonic stem cell
Stem cells developed in the early embryo that can differentiate into any cell type.
Adult stem cell
Stem cells that are found in the bone marrow, and can only differentiate into different types of blood cells.
Plant stem cells
Stem cells of plants found in the root or continually growing parts of the plant that stay with the plant for its entire life
Pluripotent
stem cells that can differentiate into nearly any cell type in an organism.
Multipotent
Stem cells that can differentiate into a limited range of cell types, typically related to a specific tissue or organ.
Unipotent
Specialised cells that differentiate into only one specific cell type
Totipotent
Unique cells that can differentiate into any type of cell, plus embryonic tissues like the placenta.
Occurs during the zygote development
