U.S. Forest Service (USFS)
USDA agency that administers national forests and grasslands and manages wildlife on those lands.
APHIS Wildlife Services
USDA program that resolves wildlife conflicts to promote coexistence between people and wildlife.
National Wildlife Research Center (NWRC)
Research arm of APHIS Wildlife Services.
Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS)
USDA agency that assists with habitat development on private and public lands.
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS)
DOI agency responsible for conserving migratory birds, certain mammals, endangered species, and sport fishes; negotiates international treaties.
National Park Service (NPS)
DOI agency whose mission is to conserve scenery, natural and historic objects, and wildlife, and provide enjoyment unimpaired for future generations.
U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)
DOI agency that provides scientific understanding and technologies to support management and conservation of national biological resources.
Bureau of Land Management (BLM)
DOI agency that manages the largest land area of federal lands and oversees multiple uses (wildlife, grazing, resource extraction, recreation, watershed).
Bureau of Reclamation (USBR)
DOI agency responsible for water development and reclamation.
Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA)
DOI agency that administers Native American lands and resources.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
Federal agency that administers NEPA and handles pollution control and monitoring; establishes and enforces environmental laws.
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
Department of Commerce agency for research and management of marine life; administers the Endangered Species Act for marine species.
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE)
Army corps responsible for dredging and stream stabilization on navigable rivers and coastal wetlands; issues dredge-and-fill permits under the Clean Water Act.
Lacey Act
Prohibits shipment, transport, and commerce of wildlife taken or possessed in violation of state, federal, or foreign laws; helped eliminate market hunting; provides for federal permits for importation of exotic wildlife.
Migratory Bird Treaty Act
Prohibits take or sale of migratory birds and implements international treaties; protects migratory birds and allows certain exemptions.
Black Bass Act
Lacey Act extension specific to black bass; prohibits transport or commerce in certain game fish.
Pittman-Robertson Act
Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Act; funds wildlife restoration via excise taxes on firearms and ammunition.
Dingell-Johnson Act
Federal Aid in Sport Fish Restoration Act; taxes on fishing equipment fund state fish restoration and management programs.
Wilderness Act
Defines the National Wilderness Preservation System; designates areas with no cars/roads; preserves hunting, fishing, and camping with pre-existing uses allowed.
Endangered Species Act
Protects endangered and threatened species and their habitats; enables listing, recovery plans, and critical habitat designation.
CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora)
International treaty regulating trade in endangered species; uses three lists and governs export/import by member nations (~120+ countries).
National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)
Requires federal agencies to assess environmental effects of proposed actions; mandates environmental assessments or impact statements and public involvement.
