Diversity
The range of human differences including but not limited to race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, social class, physical ability or attributes, religious or ethical values system, national origin, and political beliefs.
Inclusivity
The practice or policy of including people who might otherwise be excluded or marginalized.
Culture
The shared values, traditions, knowledge, beliefs, language, symbols, behaviors, and forms of artistic expression among groups of people.
Ethnicity
Identification with the cultural heritage of a group of people who share a common ancestry, language, religion, society, or nation.
Ethnic Identity Development
A knowledge of, and sense of belonging to, an ethnic group that develops over time.
Socially Constructed
Ideas that have been invented by, and generally accepted within, a society.
Race
The idea that the human species consists of distinct groups that can be distinguished according to physical characteristics such as skin color, hair texture, or facial features.
Gender Roles
The values, attitudes, and behaviors considered to be socially acceptable for biologically assigned men and women.
Gender Identity
The self-selected way in which individuals view themselves in relation to masculine and feminine traits.
Sexism
Prejudice or discrimination based upon a person's sex or gender.
Spirituality
Personal engagement in beliefs, traditions, or practices concerned with finding meaning or purpose in life, connecting with the human spirit or soul, and relating to something greater than oneself.
Religion
An organized collection of spiritual beliefs, traditions, and doctrines agreed upon by a group of people to explain the cause and purpose of the universe.
Prejudice
An unjustified negative attitude and stereotyped belief about a social group.
Stereotype
An overgeneralization about the appearance, behavior, or other characteristics of all members of a group.
In-group
An exclusive group of people with a shared sense of identity.
Out-group
People who do not belong to a specific in-group.
Discrimination
Actions taken to perpetuate the unequal treatment of a group based on prejudicial attitudes and beliefs.
Oppression
A cruel and unjust exercise of power that detracts from physical and psychological well-being.
Institutionalized Oppression
The systematic mistreatment of a subjugated or marginalized social group through the use of social institutions controlled by a dominant social group.
Subjugation
The act of bringing a person or group under domination or control.
Marginalization
The act of treating a person or group as insignificant or peripheral.
Privilege
When members of a group hold a systemic social right, authority, or advantage that other groups do not hold.
