Sexual Orientation
An inherent or immutable enduring emotional, romantic or sexual attraction to other people.
Gender Identity
One's innermost concept of self as male, female, a blend of both or neither - how individuals perceive themselves and what they call themselves.
Sex
Assigned status as male or female, based on biological, genetic, and anatomical characteristics.
Genetic Sex
Chromosomal (e.g., XX or XY) and hormonal (e.g. estrogen/testosterone) sex characteristics.
Anatomical Sex
Physical structure of reproductive organs (e.g., vagina/penis).
Gender
Subjective experience of characteristics and behaviors associated with sex.
Cisgender

Gender Roles

Gender Diverse

Non-binary
An adjective describing a person who does not identify exclusively as a man or a woman.
Gender non-conforming
A broad term referring to people who do not behave in a way that conforms to the traditional expectations of their gender.
Gender affirming care
The process by which some people strive to more closely align their internal knowledge of gender with its outward appearance. Some people socially transition, whereby they might begin dressing, using names and pronouns and/or be socially recognized as another gender.
Intersex
People born with a variety of differences in their sex traits and reproductive anatomy.
Gender Expression
External appearance of one's gender identity, usually expressed through behavior, clothing, body characteristics or voice, and which may or may not conform to socially defined behaviors and characteristics typically associated with being either masculine or feminine.
Transgender
An umbrella term for people whose gender identity and/or expression is different from cultural expectations based on the sex they were assigned at birth.
Gender Dysphoria
Clinically significant distress caused when a person's assigned sex at birth is not the same as the one with which they identify.
Minority stress
Type of stress which contributes to poorer mental and physical health and treatment outcomes for sexual minorities.
Cognitive development theory
Gender develops in a stage-like manner during childhood.
Cognitive social learning theory
Considers how the mutual influences of the individual, the environment, and psychosocial dynamics shape learning.
Social construction theory
No inherent truth to gender; it is constructed by social expectations and gender performance.
Queer Theory
Dismantles traditional assumptions about gender and sexual identities and broadly challenges traditional institutional views of gender and heteronormativity.

Fetishistic disorder
sexual interest in nonliving objects or a particular focus on non-genital body parts as indicated by fantasies, urges, or behaviors
Transvestic disorder
heterosexual man being aroused by the thought of himself as female and hence cross-dressing, or more rarely, a women cross-dressing as man

watching one's partner engage in sexual intercourse with someone else

Consensual non-consent

Persistent pattern of failure to control intense, repetitive sexual impulses or urges resulting in repetitive sexual behavior, behaviors become the focus of one's life to the exclusion of concerns regarding one's health, personal care, or responsibilities, behaviors continue despite adverse consequences or not deriving any satisfaction from conducting them
Dual control model
Theorizes that sexual behavior is regulated by influences of sexual excitation or sexual inhibition, CSB is viewed as occurring when excitatory factors outbalance the inhibitory factors
Sexual tipping point model
Theorizes that sexual behavior is caused by inhibitory versus arousing physiological, psychological, and social variables.
Four circle activity
Inner circle - list of compulsive behaviors, Middle circle - questionable behaviors that cause less problems but could lead to compulsive behaviors, Feelings circle - these are feelings that impact the person and will move them towards middle or inner circle behaviors, Outer circle - things the person can do to enhance their life and keep them engaged with other and in reality
