How much kinetic energy(motion energy) a particle has determines whether?
The matter is a solid, liquid, or gas in it’s normal state
How do gas particles move around?
Very quickly
How do liquid particles move around?
Slowly
How do solid particles move around?
Very slow than the other two
What happens when heat or cold is applied to matter?
The kinetic energy of the matter changes; therefore, the nature of substance can change
What does heat applied to water do?
Change from a liquid to a gas (steam)
What does cold applied to water do?
Change from a liquid to a solid(ice)
What happens when physical changes occur?
The molecule remains the same for example water is still made out of hydrogen and oxygen, no matter what is in it
Solid:
Have particles or molecules that are close together and don’t move much, and they have a definite shape. In many cases, that’s because the molecules are bound together in a very rigid structure of repeating patterns. The structure is called crystal lattice. The molecules are still moving, but not much
Liquid:
Have particles that are a bit more spread out than they are in solids. The big difference? They move around a lot more. ______ don’t have definite shapes, but they do have a definite volume. (Picture one cup of orange juice in a plastic box and one cup of orange juice in a coffee mug. They both have the same volume—- one cup—- but they definitely have different shapes.)
Gases:
Have particles that are much more spread out than they are in solids or liquids, and they move faster, too. Gases have no definite shape and no definite volume. The molecules move independently of one another, so gases expand to fill the area that contains them. You can compress gases(such as in a SCUBA tank) or release them (like when you turn the knob and release the gas from the same scuba tank).
