What Is the schema theory?
rather than use a structured set of movement to develop skills, the core principles can be taken from existing motor programmes and then adapted using some information from the environment and by using feedback from the senses.
What is recall schema?
this happens prior to the moment and initiates the movement
initial conditions - information from the sporting environment that must be recognised from the senses before the schema can be used. Where am I?
response specifications - information from the sporting environment is used to asses the available options open to a performer. What do I need to do?
What is recognition schema?
this is used to control the movement and happens during the movement
sensory consequences - use of the senses to help guide the movement. How does it feel / look?
response outcomes - schema and indeed the motor programme can be updated by getting knowledge of result of the action and feedback. if the action was successful then schema has been successful, if it was not adjustments may be made for next time and the motor programme is updated. What was the result?
What are the implications for coaching when using schema?
very to practice conditions (initial conditions) to encourage the players to continuously adapt their approach
frequent feedback is given by the coach to ensure that actions and motor programmes can be adjusted
point out and explain to the player when a schema can be used
positive reinforcement and praise to encourage further use of the schema other situations and praise may offer motivation to continue using a method of skill development that enhances performance
teach fundamental skills before moving onto to more intense skills
