Movement Enhancement
Focuses on improving an individual's ability to move efficiently and effectively through fundamental movement skills, movement concepts, and specific training.
Spatial Awareness
A movement concept defined as understanding where the body is in space.
Body Awareness
A movement concept defined as understanding one's body parts and their movements.
Effort Awareness
A movement concept defined as understanding how much force is used in a movement.
PAR-Q+
Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire for Everyone; a pre-participation screening tool designed to identify individuals who may need to consult a healthcare professional before starting or increasing physical activity.
Body Mass Index (BMI)
A mathematical formula used to measure body fatness based on weight and height, calculated as BMI=Height2Weight.
Heart Rate
The number of times the heart beats per minute, measured in units of bpm (beats per minute).
Resting Heart Rate
The number of heart beats per minute while at rest, with a normal adult range of 60–100 bpm.
Maximum Heart Rate (MHR)
The upper limit of what the cardiovascular system can handle during physical activity, calculated as MHR=220−Age.
Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR)
A method that measures body fatness and the distribution of stored fat around the waist and hip, calculated as WHR=Hip CircumferenceWaist Circumference.
Body Fat Percentage (BFP)
A measure of body composition describing the percentage of total body weight made up of fat mass.
Essential Fat
The minimum amount of fat needed for normal body function and survival, located in bone marrow, heart, lungs, liver, spleen, kidneys, intestines, muscles, and central nervous system.
Storage Fat
Extra fat stored beyond essential needs that serves as energy reserve, cushioning, and insulation; divided into subcutaneous fat and visceral fat.
Subcutaneous Fat
A type of storage fat located directly under the skin.
Visceral Fat
A type of storage fat located around internal organs such as the liver, kidneys, and intestines.
Non-Fat Mass (Lean Body Mass)
Everything in the body except fat, including muscles, bones, organs, water, and blood.
Female BFP Formula
The formula used to calculate body fat percentage for females: BFP=(1.20×BMI)+(0.23×Age)−5.4.
Male BFP Formula
The formula used to calculate body fat percentage for males: BFP=(1.20×BMI)+(0.23×Age)−10.8.
Cardiovascular Endurance
A health-related fitness component defining the ability of the heart, blood vessels, and lungs to supply oxygen and nutrients to working muscles efficiently.
Muscular Strength
A health-related fitness component defining the ability of muscles to exert force, specifically the maximum amount of force a muscle can generate in a single maximal effort.
1 Repetition Maximum (1 RM)
The maximum heaviness or weight an individual can lift one time.
Muscular Endurance
A health-related fitness component defining the ability to efficiently use muscles over a longer period of time by repeatedly contracting or sustaining continuous contraction using less than maximum force.
Flexibility
A health-related fitness component defining the ability to move at the joints through a full range of motion.
Body Composition
A health-related fitness component describing the proportion of body weight that is fat compared with muscles, bones, and other body tissues.
Speed
A skill-related fitness component defining the ability to move the body or parts very quickly, also known as movement time.
Power
A skill-related fitness component defining the ability to exert muscular strength quickly by combining strength and speed.
Agility
A skill-related fitness component defining the ability to start, stop, and change direction quickly and with precision.
Balance
A skill-related fitness component defining the ability to maintain a certain posture or to move without falling.
Static Balance
The ability to maintain body equilibrium while in a stationary position.
Dynamic Balance
The ability to maintain body equilibrium when moving the body.
Reaction Time
A skill-related fitness component defining the period from when a stimulus is perceived to when movement begins.
Coordination
A skill-related fitness component defining the ability to use senses together with body parts, including using two or more body parts at the same time.
