Magnification
The process of enlarging the appearance of an image.
Resolution
The level of detail that can be seen in an image.
Light Microscope
A microscope that uses visible light to view specimens and can magnify up to 2000X.
Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM)
A microscope that uses beams of electrons to examine thin slices of material, allowing for magnification up to 200,000X.
Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)
A microscope that uses beams of electrons to view the exterior of specimens, providing 3D images, with magnification up to 100,000X.
Total Magnification
Calculated by multiplying the eyepiece magnification by the objective lens magnification.
Coarse Adjustment Knob
A part of the microscope used for focusing under low and medium power.
Fine Adjustment Knob
A part of the microscope used for focusing under high power.
Diaphragm
A part of a microscope that controls the amount of light reaching the specimen.
Stage Clips
Metal clips on a microscope that hold the slide in place.
Eyepiece (Ocular Lens)
The lens at the top of the microscope that the viewer looks through.
Objective Lens
The lens that is closest to the specimen and is used to focus on the sample.
