Appositional growth
The process of bones growing in diameter, where osteoclasts reabsorb bone to create a larger medullary cavity and osteoblasts lay down bone to create circumferential lamellae.
Osteogenic cells
Bone stem cells that divide to produce more osteogenic cells, osteoblasts, and osteoclasts.
Collagen
A protein in bone that provides flexibility.
Calcium salt
A mineral in bone that provides strength.
Ossification
The process of creating bone tissue.
Intramembranous ossification
A fast bone formation process that lays minerals onto sheets of mesenchymal (undifferentiated) connective tissue; used to build flat bones of the face and skull before birth.
Endochondral ossification
A bone formation process that replaces a template of hyaline cartilage with bone; starts during fetal development and continues until bone growth ceases.
Chondrocytes
Cartilage cells responsible for creating the initial hyaline cartilage template of bones.
Perichondrium
The membrane that covers the hyaline cartilage template during early endochondral ossification.
Periosteum
The membrane formed when blood vessels grow into the perichondrium, which then begins producing osteoblasts.
Bone collar
A layer of bone created by osteoblasts around the shaft (diaphysis) of the cartilage template.
Primary ossification center
The region inside the diaphysis formed during fetal development where calcified cartilage begins converting into real bone tissue.
Secondary ossification center
The region formed in the epiphysis regions after birth during childhood that begins building real bone tissue.
Epiphyseal plate
The growth area made of hyaline cartilage located in each epiphyseal region in children.
Epiphyseal line
The ossified remnant of the epiphyseal plate present in adults after bone growth in length is finished.
Zone of reserve
epiphysis without undergoing active growth.
Zone of proliferation
undergo rapid mitosis and arrange into columns.
Zone of maturation and hypertrophy
stop dividing and increase in size.
Zone of calcification
The region in the epiphyseal plate where the cartilage matrix calcifies and chondrocytes die off due to lack of nutrients.
Zone of ossification
The region in the epiphyseal plate where osteoclasts and osteoblasts replace calcified cartilage with true mineralized bone tissue.
