when something represents / stands for something else
Theme
the main idea / message; a perception about life or human nature that the writer shares with the reader; it is NOT a lesson or moral
Point of view
the perspective from which the story is told. Who is telling the story?
1st Person POV
1st is the "I" point of view
3rd Person POV
told by a narrative voice outside the action—uses "he", "she", "they"
Omniscient
3rd person POV; the "all knowing" point of view
Limited
3rd person POV; the viewpoint is limited because we only learn what the character tells us
Speaker
in poetry --the "voice that talks to the reader"; NOT the poet
Narrator
the character or voice from whose point of view events are told in novels and short stories
Dialect
a form of language as it is spoken in a particular area or by a certain group
