Vector quantity
A quantity with both magnitude and direction
Scalar quantity
A quantity with magnitude only
what is acceleration
The rate of change of velocity
What is uniform motion?
An object moving at constant speed/velocity so acceleration is 0
What is non uniform motion?
It is when an object moves at constant acceleration
What does the gradient indicate in a distance time graph
Speed
what does the gradient show in a velocity time graph?
Acceleration
What dies the area under the line show in a velocity time graph
distance
What is stopping distance?
The distance covered by the vehicle from the moment the driver sees the obstacle to the moment the vehicle stops
What is thinking distance?
Distance travelled during the drivers reaction time
State two things that affect thinking distance?
Tiredness , alcohol or drugs , distractions
state 3 things affecting braking distance
Speed of the vehicle
Condition of brakes , tires , road
What happens when a ball is dropped 10m from the ground (example of free fall question)
-the object is falling because weight is acting downwards
-the air resistance is small so resultant is downwards
-so the object accelerates
-as the ball speeds up air resistance increases
-reducing the resultsnt force and acceleration
-eventually the air resistance becomes equal to the weight making the resultant force zero hence reaching terminal velocity
What does hookes law state?
The force applied on a string is directly proportional to the extension gained, up to the limit of proportionality
What does the law of conservation of momentum state?
Momentum before collision is equal to momentum after collision in a closed system
What are both equations for impulse?
Impulse= final momentum - initial momentum
Impulse = force x time
What is moment?
Moment is the turning effect of a force about a pivot
What does the principle of moments state?
In equilibrium clockwise moment= anti clockwise moment
