Welding
A metal joining process that involves the application of heat and/or pressure.
Soldering and Brazing
Metal joining processes using lower melting point filler alloys such that the parent metal is not melted.
Arc Welding
Coalescence obtained by heat of electric arc between work-piece and electrode.
Electrode
The electrical conductor in welding that transfers current to create an arc.
Inert Gas Shielded Arc Welding
A welding method using argon, helium, or CO2 for shielding, which requires no flux or coating.
Submerged Arc Welding
A welding method where the arc is shielded by granular fusible flux, producing a protective blanket.
Resistance Welding
A welding method where current is passed through workpieces causing local heating at the joint.
Spot Welding
A resistance welding method suitable for joining sheets of metal by applying pressure and heat at contact points.
Butt Welding
A joining process where two metal pieces are pressed together and heated by electrical resistance.
Power Density (PD)
The amount of power entering a specific area of the weld, preferable to be high.
Unit Energy (Um)
The heat required to melt a unit volume of metal.
Functions of Electrode Coatings
Provide a protective atmosphere, stabilize the arc, remove impurities, and slow down the cooling rate.
Electrodes: Bare
Used for limited applications, primarily mild steel and wrought iron, in straight polarity.
Electroslag Welding
A welding technique for heavy plates using molten flux to generate heat.
Filler Rods
Materials supplied during welding to provide additional weld metal.
