Anticlimax
A break in climatic events, making the affect of the climax less intense
Conflict
A struggle that grows out of interplay of two opposing forces, creating interest suspense and tension
Deus ex machina
Literally, “God from the machine.” The resolution of a plot by some incredible implausible chance or coincidence
Flashback
A reference to an event that happened prior to the story or play
Plot
The structure of the story or the way in which the author orders events in a story
Exposition
The process of telling the reader the information needed as the novel begins
Rising Action
The part of the drama which sets the stage for the climax
Climax
The turning point or high point in the plot
Denouement
The final resolution or untying of the plot
Stream of consciousness
A lengthy passage in literature where a character examines his/her own thoughts and feelings
Subplot
A minor complication running through a piece of fiction
Objective POV
The author does not allow the reader to hear the characters thoughts only actions and words
First Person POV
The main character is the one telling the story, reader can only hear their thoughts
Limited POV
The story is told in third person but is only aware of the thoughts of one character
Omniscient POV
Story is told in third person with the knowledge of all
Antagonist
A character that conflicts the protagonist
Characterization
Reflection of the personality of a character
Developing Character
dynamic character, he or she undergoes a permanent change in some aspect of character or outlook
Flat Character
a character with only one or two traits
Foil Character
A character who parallels the main character illuminating the main character
Protagonist
The hero or central character of a work
Round character
A character in a piece with a complex personality with multiple faces
Static Character
A person who stays the same from beginning to end
Stock Character
Stereotyped character
Motif
A symbolic image or idea that appears frequently in a story
