Self
The inner being; our sense of identity and who we believe we are.
I Self (Subjective Knower)
The thinking, aware self that knows, reflects, and makes sense of experiences from a personal point of view.
Me Self (Object That is Known)
The observable self—the parts you can describe or analyze, including experiences, traits, roles, and self-image.
Physical Self
Body, appearance, health, fitness, grooming, and wellness (includes body image).
Emotional Self
Ability to recognize, express, and manage emotions; emotional intelligence.
Mental/Cognitive Self
Thinking processes—reasoning, learning, problem solving, beliefs, goals, and knowledge.
Spiritual Self
Values, beliefs, morals, and sense of purpose; may include religious beliefs or personal philosophies.
Social Self
How you interact with others; roles you play; communication and relationships.
Moral Self
Understanding of right and wrong, ethics, and personal integrity.
Self-Concept
How you see and understand yourself; includes feelings about yourself, how others see you, and who you wish to become.
Positive Self-Concept
A realistic, healthy, affirming view of yourself; confidence, acceptance of strengths and growth, openness to feedback.
Negative Self-Concept
A poor, inaccurate, or overly critical view of yourself; fear of failure and seeking excessive validation.
Self-Esteem
Your level of confidence and sense of self-worth; how you feel about yourself.
Internal Factors
Factors inside you that influence self-esteem: self-awareness, mindset, past experiences, support system.
External Factors
Factors outside you that influence self-esteem: social media, environment, economic status, work environment, cultural norms.
Self-Image
The mental picture you have of yourself right now; may not match how others see you.
Ideal Self
The person you want to become; your goals, dreams, and aspirations; best version of yourself.
Incongruence
A mismatch between self-image and ideal self that causes emotional discomfort or distress.
Public Self
How you present yourself in public; the image shown to others.
Real Self
Who you truly are; your authentic self.
Behavioral Self
Your behavior and bodily reflexes; actions observed by others.
Four Concepts of Self
Public Self, Real Self, Behavioral Self, and Ideal Self—the different facets of how the self is expressed and perceived.
Descartes' Cogito
'I think, therefore I am'—a claim that thinking proves existence.
John Locke: Experiences
'I am a person who experiences'—the self shaped by experiences.
David Hume: Bundle of Experiences
The self is a bundle of perceptions and experiences.
George Herbert Mead: I vs Me
'If the I speaks, the Me hears'—distinction between the thinking self and the observed self.
Crisis
A state of confusion and anxiety when coping mechanisms fail; distress.
Stress
A physical and emotional response to challenging situations; fight-or-flight.
Five Fs of Stress Response
A framework to understand stress responses: recognize patterns, manage behavior, support others, and promote resilience.
Self-Concept (overview)
How you see and understand yourself, including feelings about yourself, how others see you, and who you wish to become.
Resilience
The process and outcome of adapting to difficult experiences; ability to manage, recover, and grow.
