abdominal cavity

includes the liver, kidneys, spleen, stomach, and intestines

Abdominopelvic cavity

located below chest and extends from the diaphragm to the lower floor of the pelvis

abduction

moving away from center of body

adduction

moving towards center of body

Anterior

pertaining to the front

Cranial cavity

contains the Brian inside the skull

Distal

away from the trunk, farther from the limb attachment

Dorsal

refers to the back or upper surface

Dorsal cavity

close to the spine in the posterior portion of the body; contains the spinal column and CNS

Frontal (coronal) plane

vertical plane at right angles to the sagittal plane that divides the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) portions

Inferior

below or under

Lateral

towards the side, away from the midline

Medial

towards the middle or midline

Mediastinum

located mid upper chest, contains pericardial cavity

Mid-sagittal / median plane

vertical passing through the center of the body (midline) that cuts it longitudinally into right and left halves

Pelvic cavity

includes the bladder and reproductive organs

Pericardial cavity

located in the mediastinum, containing the heart, trachea, and esophagus

Pleural cavity

located in the thoracic cavity, contains the lungs

Posterior

refers to the back

Prone

ventral surface facing downward

Proximal

Close to the trunk, nearer to the point of attachment

Sagittal plane

arbitrary vertical plane passing through the body parallel to the midline slicing longitudinally right and left

Spinal cavity

contains the spinal cord inside the spinal column

Superficial

near the surface

Superior

above or over

Thoracic cavity

chest cavity, containing heart, lungs, major vessels, trachea, esophagus, and nerves and enclosed by the diaphragm, ribs, vertbral column, and sternum (breast bone)

Transverse (Axial) plane

horizontal plane at right angles to the sagittal and frontal planes, slicing the body into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) portions

Ventral

pertaining to the front, towards the bottom
