Law of conservation of mass
Mass is neither created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction.
Reactant
A substance that takes part in and undergoes change during a reaction.
Product
A substance produced during a chemical reaction.
Coefficient
A number placed in front of a chemical formula in a balanced equation to indicate the number of moles.
Synthesis
A chemical reaction in which two or more substances combine to form a single compound.
Decomposition
A chemical reaction in which a single compound breaks down into two or more simpler substances.
Single Replacement
A chemical reaction in which one element replaces another in a compound.
Double Replacement or Displacement
A chemical reaction in which two compounds exchange ions or elements.
Combustion
A chemical reaction that involves rapid reaction between a substance with an oxidant, usually oxygen, to produce heat and light.
Neutralization (Acid-Base)
A chemical reaction in which an acid and a base react quantitatively with each other.
Oxidation-Reduction (Redox)
A chemical reaction that involves the transfer of electrons between two species.
Precipitation / Precipitate
The formation of a solid in a solution during a chemical reaction.
Aqueous
A solution in which the solvent is water.
