Dark Age
A period following the fall of the Western Roman Empire characterized by a lack of written records, lower cultural and economic productivity, and feudalism.
Feudalism
A decentralized political system in which local lords held power and land, exchanging military service and loyalty with vassals.
Salic Law
The legal code of the Salic Franks, which became the basis for law in Charlemagne's Empire and included specific punishments for crimes.
Charlemagne
Also known as Charles the Great, he was a Carolingian ruler who expanded the Frankish empire and promoted education and Christianity.
Anglo-Saxon Culture
Cultural achievements of the Anglo-Saxons included the development of Old English, literature, and historical writings, as well as archaeological contributions.
Bayeux Tapestry
An embroidery that depicts the events leading to the Norman conquest of England, illustrating life, architecture, and social structures in the Middle Ages.
Gothic Cathedral
A style of architecture characterized by pointed arches, flying buttresses, and large stained glass windows, intended to be filled with light.
Romanesque Cathedral
An earlier style of cathedral architecture noted for its thick walls, small windows, and rounded arches, resembling castles.
Vassals
Individuals who received land from a lord in exchange for loyalty and military service under the feudal system.
Peasants
Members of the lower social class in medieval society who worked the land and were often serfs tied to their lords.
Catholic Church
A significant institution in medieval Europe that played a central role in religious, educational, and political life.
Medieval Society
A societal structure characterized by feudal systems, with clear hierarchies including nobles, clergy, and peasants.
