Posture
The body's position in space that maintains balance during movements and static positions.
Static balance
The ability to maintain equilibrium when stationary.
Dynamic balance
The ability to maintain equilibrium during movement.
Postural Sway
The slight movements forward and backward that occur during quiet standing.
Functional posture
A posture with no pain, normal muscle tone, and balanced alignment.
Non-functional posture
A posture associated with pain, abnormal tone, tension, or imbalances.
Key anatomical landmarks
Specific points on the body used to assess postural alignment and positioning.
Plumb line
A tool used to assess alignment; should pass through key weight-bearing joints.
Kyphosis
An excessive outward curvature of the spine, causing hunching of the back.
Lordosis
An excessive inward curvature of the spine, commonly observed in the lumbar region.
Swayback posture
A posture characterized by an excessive posterior pelvic tilt and forward head.
Windswept deformity
A condition where the lower extremities are positioned as if 'swept' to one side, often causing one leg to adduct and internally rotate.
Supine assessment
An evaluation performed with the individual lying on their back to assess certain body planes and joints.
Reducible posture
A flexible posture where the individual can move towards a more upright or midline position.
Non-reducible posture
A fixed posture where movement towards upright position is restricted due to soft tissue or joint limitations.
Pelvic tilt
The forward or backward rotation of the pelvis, which affects spinal alignment.
ASIS and PSIS
Anterior Superior Iliac Spine and Posterior Superior Iliac Spine, critical landmarks for assessing pelvic alignment.
Sitting posture
The positioning of the body while seated, influenced by surface support and alignment.
