Clause
A group of related words containing a subject and a verb.
Subject
The person, animal, place, thing, or concept that performs the action.
How can you identify the subject?
Ask “Who or what?”
Verb
A word that expresses what the subject does or what happens.
Independent clause
A group of words with a subject and verb that expresses a complete thought and can stand alone as a sentence.
Dependent clause
A group of words with a subject and verb that does not express a complete thought and cannot stand alone.
Can a dependent clause stand alone as a sentence?
No.
Subordinating conjunction
A word used to connect a dependent clause to an independent clause.
What can subordinating conjunctions establish?
Time, place, reason, condition, concession, or comparison.
What are some common subordinating conjunctions?
After, although, as, because, before, even though, if, since, though, unless, until, when, whenever, whereas, and while.
What usually begins a dependent clause?
A subordinating conjunction.
Simple sentence
A sentence containing one independent clause or complete thought.
Does a simple sentence have to be short?
No. It can contain multiple subjects, verbs, adjectives, and other details while still expressing one complete thought.
Compound sentence
A sentence containing at least two independent clauses connected by a coordinating conjunction.
What does FANBOYS stand for?
For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So.
What are FANBOYS?
Coordinating conjunctions.
Complex sentence
A sentence containing one independent clause joined with one or more dependent clauses.
Does the order of clauses in a complex sentence matter?
No.
When does a complex sentence require a comma?
When the dependent clause comes before the independent clause.
Compound-complex sentence
A sentence containing at least two independent clauses and at least one dependent clause.
Why can complex sentences sometimes be more useful than compound sentences?
They can show clearer and more specific relationships between ideas.
