Communication process
The exchange of messages and feedback between a sender and receiver.
Sender
The person who delivers a message.
Message
The information or idea sent to another person.
Receiver
The person who receives the message.
Feedback
A response showing the sender that the message was received or understood.
Verbal communication
Using spoken or written words to send a message.
Nonverbal communication
Using body language, voice tone, volume, and other wordless signals to communicate.
Body language
Movements, posture, facial expressions, and gestures that communicate without words.
Active listening
Giving someone your full attention and responding in ways that show understanding.
Passive communication
Hiding or not clearly stating needs, wants, and feelings.
Aggressive communication
Making demands of or insulting others.
Passive-aggressive communication
Indirectly making demands or insulting others without clearly stating needs, wants, and feelings.
Assertive communication
Clearly stating needs, wants, opinions, and feelings.
I-statement
A statement that explains how the speaker thinks or feels without judging the receiver.
Nonverbal cue
A wordless signal, such as a gesture, facial expression, or tone of voice.
