Boer (South African Boer)

Has Angora and Indian breeds. White body, brown or balck head. Heavily muscled, large framed, good carcass quality, deposit fat better than most breeds. Have great browsing ability.

Spanish

descendants of goats brought over with spanish explorers. very common breed. nannies have low milk prod. hardy tough breed with low nutri req. wild or semi-wild

Tennessee Fainting Goat (Myotonic or Wooden Leg)

From U.S., present in Tennessee. Fight or flight hormone doesn't work. Meat strain is heavy rump and deep chested.

Alpine

From France. Nannies are excellent milkers, have large well-shaped udders. Can thrive in any climate while maintaining good health and production.

La Mancha (American La Mancha)

developed in U.S., with Spanish origins. No outer ear. Have high amount of butterfat in milk. Some have elf ear.

Nubian (Anglo-Nubian)

from England. British+ African, Indian bucks. Large size with logn ears. Brown to tan. Known for butterfat content w average milk prod. Have heat tolerance.

Oberhasli

From Switzerland. Medium size, vigorous, alert appearance. Typically chamois. Used primarily for milk prod.

Saanen

preferred: white. known for quantity of milk. sensitive to sunlight

Toggenburg

Smaller than Alpine breeds. Oldest dairy goat breed. Light fawn to dark choco. Do well in coller climates, females have great udder dev. high milk prod

Kinder (dual)

From Snohomish, Washington. Pygmy buck + Nubian females. Rich, sweet milk and prolific. Small-sizes w high feed efficiency and easy fleshing.

Berkshire

Known for meat characteristics: flavor and marbling. Have fast and efficient growth. Reproductively efficient.

Chester White

Form Pennsylvania. White with droppy ears. More muscular than Yorkshire and landraces. Good maternal characteristics.

Duroc

New Jersey and N.Y. but…. Guinea pigs in Africe. Often used as sire breed. More maternal than Hampshire.

Hampshire

Old English breed. Black with white belt, have erect ears. Often used in terminal sire programs. Prolific sows but poor sow productivity..

Pietrain

From Belgium. Short and stocky but muscular particularly in ham. Lean with good carcass quality. Prolific but lack maternal instincts, low milk prod. Susceptible to PSS

Poland China

from Ohio. excellent feeds and good rate of gain

Spot (Formerly Spotted Poland China)

From Ohio. Good feeders, early maturing with good efficiency, rate of gain and carcass quality. Sows are prolific but used for meat prod.

Yorkshire

Large Whites. Extemely prolifc, good milk prod. Considered maternal breed but are long bodied and heavy muscled. White with erect ears.

Landrace

Typically long bodied. Known for maternal ability. White with large droppy ear.

Meishan

From China. Slow growing but good meat taste. 15-16 litter size, 2.5-3 mos sexual maturation. Poor carcass.
