Statement
Something that someone says or writes officially, or an action done to express an opinion.
Current
Belonging to the present time; occurring or existing now.
Permanent
Lasting for a long time or forever.
Permanent resident
A person who has been granted the right to live in a country indefinitely.
Permanent solution
A way of solving a problem or dealing with a difficult situation that is intended to last forever.
Permanent staff
Employees who are hired on a long-term basis rather than temporarily.
Afford
To be able to buy or do something because you have enough money or time; also used to mean providing or giving something.
Can ill afford to
Used to say that someone should definitely not do something because it will cause problems.
Afford protection
To provide or offer safety from harm or injury.
State
A condition or way of being at a particular time; also refers to a country or its government.
Mainstream
Considered normal, and having or using ideas or beliefs accepted by most people.
Theory
An opinion, explanation, or a system of ideas intended to explain something.
Bizarre
Very strange or unusual.
Aviator
An aircraft pilot (e.g., Amy Johnson).
Civilization
Human society, culture, or way of life of a society at a particular time.
Silly
Showing little thought or judgment; foolish.
Splitting headache
A very severe or intense headache.
Mumble
To speak quietly and in a way that is not clear so that words are difficult to understand.
Definitely
Without any doubt.
Matt
Used to describe a surface, colour, or paint that is not shiny.
Gloss
A smooth, shiny appearance on the surface of something.
Polish / Polished
To rub something to clean it and make it shine; or a surface that has been made smooth and shiny.
Adventurous
Willing to try new or difficult things.
Octopus
A sea creature with a soft, oval body and eight arms (tentacles).
Catch up with
To reach the same point as someone; to update news; or to suffer the consequences of past actions.
Check in
To arrive and register at a hotel or airport.
Check out
To leave a hotel after paying the bill; or to investigate/look at something.
Drop off
To let someone out of a vehicle; or to fall asleep.
Go away
To leave a place or person; or to go on holiday.
Keep up with
To stay at the same point or level as someone or something else.
Make for
To move towards a specific place.
Pull in
To stop a vehicle by the side of the road.
Run over
To hit someone or something with a vehicle while driving.
See off
To go to a station or airport to say goodbye to someone.
Set out / Set off
To start a journey.
Take off
When an aircraft leaves the ground and begins to fly.
Turn out
To happen in a particular way or to have a particular result.
Voyage
A long journey involving travel by sea or in space.
Excursion
A short journey or trip, especially one taken as a leisure activity.
Dawn
The first appearance of light in the sky before sunrise.
Fetch
To go to where something is and bring it back.
Off the top of your head
From memory, without thinking about it much or looking it up.
Head over heels in love
Completely and utterly in love with someone.
Bank holiday
An official public holiday when banks and most businesses are closed.
Arrive in / Arrive at
Use 'in' for large places like cities or countries; use 'at' for specific locations like a building or station.
Keen on
Very interested, eager, or wanting (to do) something very much.
Regret to inform you
A formal way to say you are sorry to tell someone bad news.
