psychiatric disorder

illness w/ psych/behavioral symptoms → impaired function

psychiatric emergency

agitated, violent, uncooperative behavior → threat to self/others

behavioral crisis

any reaction to events that interferes w/ activites of daily living or has become unacceptable to patient/family/community

organic disorder

dysfunction of brain caused by disturbance in PHYSICAL/PSYCHOLOGICAL function of BRAIN TISSUE (can be measured)

functional disorder

physiological disorder that impairs body functions when body seems to be STRUCTURALLY NORMAL

3 functional disorders

schizophrenia, anxiety, depression

psychosis

state of delusion in which patient is out of touch w/ reality (live in their own reality of ideas/feelings)

schizophrenia onset

early adulthood w/ symptoms becoming more prominent over time

schizophrenia S/S

delusion, hallucination, lack of interest in pleasure, erratic speech

excited delirium (agitated delirium/exhaustive mania) S/S

hyperactive irrational behavior, vivid hallucinations, hypertension, tachycardia, diaphoresis, dilated pupils

delirium

condition of impairment in cognition function that can present w/ disorientation, hallucinations,d elusions

agitation

behavior characterized by restless + irregular physical activity

what should you be concerned for if someone is in a state of excited delirium

AMI, dysrhythmia

suicide warning signs

avoiding eye contact, being withdrawn, unable to talk abt future, plans of death

PTSD S/S

helplessness, anxiety, anger, fear, feeling calm in dangerous situations
