When and why did the Second Great Awakening happen?

This happened in the 1820-1840s and was led by Charles Grandison Finney and Lyman Beecher. One of the reason was that there a low attendance church rate for the younger generation.

People started to attend church more and the number of ministers, methodis, and baptist increased. Also middle class women became more involved. These ideas also spread to all religions. New religious groups will emerge.
