American Government Fundamental Principles

Limited Government

A fundamental political principle stating that government is not all-powerful and may only do those things that the people have given it the power to do.

Republicanism

A political ideology centered on a government by the people, not inherited rulers, where citizens have say in governance and power is held by elected representatives to protect liberty and the common good. It emphasizes civic virtue and the rule of law, standing in opposition to monarchies and dictatorship.

Federalism

A form of government established by the Constitution of the U.S. in which the national government is supreme, powers not given to the national government are reserved to the states, and certain powers are denied to both national and state governments.
