Noun
A naming word (e.g., cat, London).
Verb
A doing or being word (e.g., run, is).
Adjective
A word that describes nouns (e.g., red, large).
Adverb
A word that describes verbs (e.g., quickly, loudly).
Pronoun
A word that replaces nouns (e.g., he, she, it).
Determiner
A word that introduces nouns (e.g., a, the, some).
Expanded Noun Phrase
A phrase that gives more detail about a noun using adjectives or prepositional phrases.
Relative Clause
A clause that gives extra information about a noun using words like who, which, that.
Modal Verb
A verb that shows possibility or necessity: can, could, will, would, shall, should, may, might, must.
Adverb of Possibility
An adverb that shows how likely something is: perhaps, maybe, definitely, probably.
Simple Sentence
One main clause (e.g., The dog barked.)
Compound Sentence
Two main clauses joined with and, but, or (e.g., The dog barked and the cat ran away.)
Complex Sentence
A main clause and a subordinate clause (e.g., Although it was raining, we went outside.)
Fronted Adverbial
Words or phrases at the beginning of a sentence that describe the action, usually followed by a comma.
Perfect Verb Form
Used to show an action that is completed: has/have/had + past participle.
Direct Speech
Shows the exact words a person says, enclosed in inverted commas (speech marks).
Relative Pronoun
A pronoun that introduces a clause that adds more information about a noun (who, which, that, whose, whom).
Possessive Pronoun
A pronoun indicating ownership (e.g., hers).
Prefix
A word part added to the beginning of a word to change its meaning (e.g., ir- in illegal).
Conjunction
A word used to connect clauses or sentences or to coordinate words in the same clause (e.g., and, but, or).
Parenthesis
An insertion of material that interrupts the typical flow of a sentence. Can be enclosed in brackets, dashes or commas.
Fasting
Eating little or no food for a period of time.
Muslim
Relating to the followers of the religion of Islam.
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)
The final messenger of Allah (God) to whom the Qur'an was revealed. PBUH means 'Peace Be Upon Him.
