What is Feldman’s method of Art Criticism


professor developed a 4 step process in the 1960’s-70’s that allows some to visually read and critique an artwork in an informed way.

Each step must be completed consecutively in the sequence that it was intended, as they build off one another.

This is a widely used method seen in all levels of art education.

DESCRIBE


describing what is seen in the art work; in depth and completely objective;

use netural works when describing; start the credit line info and be sure to italicize name of the art work; move on the most obvious info in the art work (what is this artwork of/hold?);

expand on the elements of your initial, general, description—(clothing, colors, sizes of objects etc.);

try going into even greater detail about those details—(are the colors vibrant? Dull? Etc.).; only explaining NO JUDGEMENT

analyzing the relationship of elements in the artwork; where you identify and describe the relationships between the Elements (ingredients) and Principles (directions) within the artwork.;

consider asking yourself the following to assist you in determining what elements are present where particular principles are observed EX: Emphasis (PD)—what is the focal point of the artwork, and what element draws your eye to it? (Analyze);

Transitional sentence should mention various key relationships of the elements and principles present within the artwork;

determining the artwork’s meaning based on your observations; integrate you own opinions into your writing based off of your findings in your description and analysis paragraphs;
