Language
A system of words, symbols, signs, and rules that people use to communicate ideas, thoughts, feelings, and information with others.
Oral communication
Happens when we use language to interact with others through speaking and listening.
Written communication
The process of sharing information, ideas, thoughts, or feelings through written words and symbols, allowing messages to be read, reviewed, and kept for future reference.
Multimodal communication
The use of two or more modes (or forms) to create meaning and communicate a message by combining elements such as words, images, sounds, colors, gestures, and layout.
Written Text
Words, letters, numbers, sentences that convey information in a multimodal context.
Visuals
Images, photos, illustrations, icons, charts, diagrams, colors, and layout used to create meaning.
Audio
Sound, music, narration, tone of voice, and sound effects used as a communication mode.
Video
Moving images that show actions, events, or processes.
Gestures & Expressions
Facial expressions, body language, and movements used to convey meaning.
Spatial/Layout Design
The arrangement of elements on the page or screen.
Meaning-making
A characteristic of multimodal communication where each mode adds meaning and supports the message.
Contextual
A characteristic of multimodal communication where the choice of modes depends on the purpose, audience, and situation.
Interactive
A characteristic of multimodal communication that encourages the audience to engage in different ways.
Flexible
A characteristic of multimodal communication that allows it to be adjusted to different platforms and needs.
