What is an enzyme?
A biological catalyst that lowers activation energy
If the temp is too low, how does this affect the enzyme?
slows down reaction
If the temp is too high, how does this affect the enzyme?
active site denatures and reaction stops. Enzymes are proteins and heat breaks down the bonds
What happens if the substrate concentration is too low?
reactions are slow- successful collisions occur less
What happens if the substrate concentration is too high?
nothing, once active site is full nothing else happens
What does Amylase do?
breaks down starch into maltase
Where is Amylase found?
saliva, pancreas, small intenstine
What reaction can you do to test for starch?
cut potato cube into small peices, use dropper to place iodine on sample, if present it will turn from orange/brown to blue/black
What does protease do?
breaks down proteins into amino acids
Where is protease found?
stomach and small intestine
What does lipase do?
breaks down fats/lipids into fatty acids/glycerol
Where is lipase found?
small intestine
