New cards

Anatomy of the Dura Mater

thick, fibrous, most superficial layer

2
New cards

Anatomy of the Arachnoid Mater

thin, ‘webby’, enveloped my dura and pia mater

3
New cards

Anatomy of the Pia Mater

deepest layer. allows blood vessels to nourish the spinal cord and brain

4
New cards

Anatomy & Function of Denticulate Ligs.

Extension of pia mater.

stabilize spine and keep the spine in the midline of vertebral columb

5
New cards

the epidural space holds?

the subdural is a ? space

space filled with fat. venous plexus found here.

potential space

6
New cards

The subarachnoid space holds what? the function of this is?

Cerebrospinal fluid

creates buoyancy, cushion for the spinal cord and provides nutrients to the spinal cord

7
New cards
  1. Significance of the ventral horn of spinal cord?

  2. Function of the dorsal horn?

  1. The process of bringing motor function to skeletal mm. begins at the ventral horn.

  2. The dorsal horn relays sensory information from the limbs to the CNS

8
New cards

Function of the dorsal ramus.

The dorsal ramus’s main job is to relay sensory info. However, it brings motor innervation to the epiaxial mm. The dorsal ramus is small because it is close to the epiaxial mm. - the mm. it innervates

9
New cards

Function of the ventral ramus.

It’s main job is to bring motor function to the limbs, but it also has the ability to relay sensory information back to teh CNS due to the mixed spinal nerve. The ventral ramus is larger because it is bringing motor information further away to the limbs.

10
New cards
  1. Describe the location of the recurrent meningeal branches of spinal nerves.

  2. What do they innervate?

  1. come off ventral and dorsal rami and re-enter the intervertebral foramen

  2. Innervate meninges, facet jts, periphery of the IVD

11
New cards

The spinal cord has a cervical enlargement and a lumbar enlargement. Why?

The cervical enlargement gives rise to the brachial plexus - innervation of upper appendage. The lumbar enlargement gives rise to the lumbar plexus - innervation of the lower appendage.

12
New cards

The dural sac terminates at?

sacrum

13
New cards
  1. the conus medullaris of the spinal cord is the…?

  2. the cauda equina is?

  1. tapered lower end of the spinal cord / terminating portion of lumbar enlargment

  2. spinal nerves (L2-coccygeal n.)

14
New cards

The pia mater of the spinal cord collapses and creates what?

filum terminale interna

15
New cards

Function of the filum terminale interna?

provides longitudinal stabilty

16
New cards

what two structures come out of the suboccipital triangle?

suboccipital nerve, vertebral artery
