What are Valence Electrons?
refers to the outer-most electron shell of an atom
Why is it important?
they are important because they are involved in chemical bonding between 2 atoms to create a compound
Ions
are charged particles that is the result of an atoms losing or gaining electrons
Metallic atoms
often lose their valence electrons to form a positive ion called cations
Non metallic atoms
often gain electrons in their valence shell to form a negative ion, called anions
How top find the charge of ions?
Number of protons-total electrons
