1. Identifying and Handling Hydroplaning
Hydroplaning occurs when your tires lose contact with the road and ride on a thin cushion of water.
The Warning Sign: Look at the tires of vehicles in front of you. If they stop throwing up a clear water spray, the road is heavily flooded, and you are at high risk of hydroplaning.
Speed Threshold: Hydroplaning can happen at speeds as low as 30 mph if your tires have poor tread depth.
The Recovery Action: If you hydroplane, do not slam on the brakes. Take your foot off the accelerator, keep the wheel straight, and let the vehicle slow down naturally until the tires regain traction.
2. Spotting and Handling Black Ice
Black ice is a transparent glaze of ice on the pavement that is nearly impossible to see.
The "Mirror" Test: Check your truck's front mirrors and windshield wipers. If ice is forming on them, it is highly likely ice is also forming on the road.
Road Temperature: If the road looks wet but there is no spray coming off the tires of vehicles ahead of you, the water has frozen into black ice.
Problem Areas: Bridges, overpasses, and shaded areas freeze first. Bridges freeze faster because cold air circulates underneath the structure, lowering the road surface temperature.
3. Key Driving Adjustments for Slippery Surfaces
The NY CDL manual expects you to memorize exact speed reductions for poor weather:
Wet Roads: Reduce your speed by at least one-third.
Packed Snow: Reduce your speed by at least one-half.
Ice: Reduce your speed to a crawl. If it is safe to pull over, stop driving immediately.
Engine Brakes/Retarders: Turn your engine brake (Jake brake) or retarder completely OFF in wet, snowy, or icy conditions. If the drive wheels lock up or lose traction while the engine brake is engaged, it can immediately trigger a dangerous jackknife skid.
