Point
Design Element- A mark that may be used to indicate position and location. Point is small in relation to the entire design and doesn’t need to be circular
Line
Design Element- Considered as a moving dot. It has length and width and can be made by a variety of materials.
Color
Design Element- Colour is generated by light reflecting off a surface. Colour is a visual sensation and can be represented realistically, or artists can deliberately change the colour to convey an emotion.
Tone
Design Element- Tone is how light or dark a color is.
Shape
Design Element- A defined and contained space. 2D. Shape can be free form or geometric.
Form
Design Element- A 3D shape. Form compromises volume. It has length, width, and height.
Texture
Design Element- Texture is the apparent physical quality of a work of art. It may be physical or maybe shown through a visual.
Type
Design Element- Type is the visual representation of a word, number or character. Sets of typefaces belong to families and can be serifs, sans serifs, regular, bold or italic.
Contrast
Design Principle- Contrast can be defined as difference. Difference between art elements like color, tone, texture etc. Arranging opposite elements together.
Pattern
Design Principle- Pattern refers to the recurring and ordered arrangement of an object or motif. Patterns are made by arranging lines, shapes and forms in a certain way.
Cropping
Design Principle- Cropping involves the cutting or chopping of an object or image. The use of cropping can increase hierachy and create impact.
Hierarchy
Design Principle- Visual information arranged in order of importance. Attention is drawn to the most important part of the design composition. Factors determining hierarchy may include scale, contrast, color, or the positioning of visual components.
Scale
Design Principle- Scale refers to the overall physical size of an artwork or the sizes of objects within the artwork. Scale can be exaggerated to be very large or reduced to be small compared to the real world.
Proportion
Design Principle- Proportion refers to the relationships between different sized parts within one whole. Proportion has the option to be realistic or changed and/or distorted.
Balance
Design Principle- Balance refers to the overall distribution of visual weight within a composition. A well balanced composition feels comfortable to look at.
Figure/Ground
Design Principle- The visual relationship between foreground and background.
