Positive and Negative

Positive Reinforcement

Presenting a desirable stimuli (candy) after the performance of a (good) behavior.

Ex:

• High five for getting a correct answer

• Getting candy for good behavior

• Employee of the month

Negative Reinforcement

Removing an unpleasant stimulus (car beeping) after the desired behavior (fasten seatbelt) is displayed in order to increase the likelihood of that behavior being repeated.

Ex:

• Nagging stops when work is done

• Fasten seatbelt to stop car beeping

• Getting work done to avoid working after hours

Positive Punishment

A method of behavior modification where an unpleasant stimulus (spanking) is added to a situation (misbehavior) to discourage a specific behavior.

Ex:

• Receiving a parking ticket

• Spanking

• Detention

Negative Punishment

Removing a positive stimulus (drivers license) to remove negative behavior (drinking and driving).

Ex:

• Revoking driver’s license

• Time outs

• Grounding teenagers
